Genealogy Event 7
Event Type: Custom Event
Event Date: 21 DEC 1887
Record Source: he was one of several men who appeared at Barnard Castle Police Court on charges of assault and intimidation resulting from the ongoing dispute at Woodland Colliery, where union men were on strike and non-union men were still employed. "It appeared that parties of unionists and non-unionists came upon each other with angry and aggressive results, and some sneaking and cowardly assaults had taken place. Men had rushed at each other in the dark, dealt a blow stealthily, and bolted. Evidence showed also that the coarsest of language had been used". Robert GOUNDRY denied a charge of intimidation. The Chairman of the Bench said "they must inflict such penalties as were calculated to impress and to leave a mark, otherwise these prosecutions would be of no avail whatsoever. It was a pity that money was thus extracted from the miners, when he knew that it could so much more profitably be expended in their families. That, however, the Bench could not help. Penalties amounting in the aggregate to £8-10s. were inflicted, and the additional costs, which were said to be very heavy. - The men pleaded for time to pay the fines and costs, and the court allowed a fortnight's grace, it being understood that if the money was not then paid imprisonment would follow according to the scale laid down"
Genealogy Event 8
Event Type: Custom Event
Event Date: 18 SEP 1888
Record Source: 17 charges of assault were heard at Staindrop Police Court, the complainants being non-union men and the defendants union men, or strike-hands at Woodland Colliery. The Chairman of the Bench said "they were extremely sorry to say that it was simply a revival of the old story. They hoped the men would soon be upon good terms. It was really a most dreadful state of affairs. If one man got work through another man being turned out of a place, he could not see why there should be any bad blood going on amongst them. Instead of making the best of the things of this world, they were doing quite the contrary. There were certain men to blame and they were Thomas STEPHENSON, Hugh STEPHENSON, and R. GOUNDRY. It was quite clear that they were the originators of the row, and they would be fined 10s. and costs each. The other cases were dismissed".
