    Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock for 1st Sgt. Robert Hayes McConnell Jr., who died at 4:50 p.m., Sunday at or near the Orlando (Fla.) Air Base of gunshot wounds in the body, details of the accident being unavailable until an investigation is completed there by Army officials.

    The remains arrived here from Orlando at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, accompanied by Sgt. Lewis Paulakos.

    The Rev. W. F. Wimberly, pastor of the Athens Baptist Church, of which Sgt. McConnell was a member, officiated at the final rites held from his parents' home, 201 East Bryan Street. He was assisted by Dr. B. T. Waites, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Athens City Cemetery, Max Almand, assisted by Lewis Brown of Huntsville, directing, and the following served as active pallbearers: James H. McCoy, George C. Johnson, Baylis Hightower, Dr. D. J. Wilson, Fred Martin and James Chambers. Honorary pallbearers included H. G. Davis, Dr. J. O. Belue, W. P. Chandler, Paul Gish, P. W. Hendricks Jr., Judge D. L. Rosenau Jr., and John Wilson.

    Although his earlier life was spent in Athens, where he was born Feb. 20, 1909, and where he completed the elementary schools, Robert Hayes McConnell Jr., had spent most of the years since then away from his native county. He finished preparatory school at the old Anniston (Ala.) Military Institute, later attending Auburn and Furman University, Greenville, S.C. He was for six summers, a director at the Character Camp, Rio Vista, Texas, and spent four months in 1932 on a tourof the European continent, working his way across the Atlantic as a ship's helper.

    Seven years prior to his induction into the United State Army on April 1, 1941, he became connected with the Humble Oil Company of Houston, Texas, working his way up in the organization from a field man to assistant bureau chief of the department of annunity and thrift.

    At the time of his death, he was first sergeant of his company of the 502nd Signal Aircraft Warning Regiment, U.S. Army, and was anticipating assignment as a commissioned officer.

    Sgt. McConnell visited here the latter part of April when he enjoyed a happy reunion with his sister, Mrs. Owen F. Herring, of Durham, N.C., whom he had not seen in some years, and other members of the devoted family circle.
