Record Source: Robert Watt is my grandfather. My grandfather died before I was born so what I know is from documented research and from what people who knew him have told me.
Robert was the eldest son and second child of five children born to John Watt Who Originated In The Orkney Islands North Of Scotland And His Wife Margaret Or Maggie Shakespeare (Who Died At The Age Of 37 Due To Illness). John and Maggie had 5 children who were May, Robert, John, Donald and Isabella. Robert also had two step siblings by father John's second marriage to Ann Ellen Maher. They were Thomas and Annie (who didn't survive infancy).
At the time of the outbreak of WW1 Robert wished to be of service to his country as so many did I expect. His application for active service was rejected on medical grounds (his chest would not or did expand to an acceptable size). He did serve his country though as a king's messenger for legal documents. On his enlistment documents his occupation is "clerk".
He married Two Women In His Lifetime And They Were Sebbriel Annie Mitchell And Lily Baxter My Grandmother.
Sebbriel Annie died about 11 days after the birth of their only child John Robert (later named John Robert Watt-Bright) as he was reared by a relative of his mother's by the surname Bright.
Robert married Lily Baxter On 16 June 1923.
Robert Watt was a graduate of Sydney University. He was admitted to the bar as a solicitor and attorney. He was also a chartered accountant. His favourite author was Charles Dickens and his favourite book was Great Expectations by the same author.
In his lifetime he kept in written contact with cousins in the Orkney from whence his father hailed. Robert was no doubt name for his paternal grandfather Robert Watt.
In all my endeavours to learn about my grandfather everyone (without exception) has had only good to say of him whether written or spoken to me. I am proud of my grandfather for his skills however I am far prouder of him for the example he set of someone who used whatever talents, knowledge or skills he possessed to be a blessing in the lives of those around him.
During the Great Depression people could not afford to pay for his services always so he would take his payment in a sack of potatoes or carrots or whatever they would present.
He possessed the ability to set up rapport with people of all walks of life and set them at ease.
When a farmer was knocked silly by a tractor accident he acted quickly to obtain the written documentation from two suitable persons that stated that this man was sane within 48 hours or this man would have been locked away in a mental institution, such was the law at the time. Another time (and I have heard this from the boy's sister myself) there was a young man who earned a scholarship to a prestigious school in the town of Parkes. Being the Great Depression his father thought it better that he accept an apprenticeship as a mechanic in a local garage in Manildra. Upon hearing about this my grandfather went to the home of his friend Bill Ashcroft (the boy's father). He offered an apprenticeship in his office at the same rate of pay the garage was offering. So now this young man sat next to Robert Watt as his secretary and learned from watching him. He later became an accountant because of what he learned watching my grandfather. To the day he died himself Bill Ashcroft tended his friend's grave, such was his gratitude and high regard for his friend, Bob Watt.
When Robert was dying he was reading the journeys of the Apostle Paul (who was also a lawyer) where it mentions "I have fought the good fight...) from his wife's grandmother's bible.
