Record Source: The Posse Comitatus conducted in 1798 to survey the British male population for eligible service personnel to fight the Napoleonic War has survived in full for the county of Buckinghamshire, and provides a very comprehensive account of male inhabitants between the ages of 15 and 60 years at that time. Samuel was recorded in the parish of Weston Underwood and his occupation was listed as "lace man". He is the only lace man in the area and from the order in which he was recorded, his status in the community followed only that of the gentlemen, and farmers, ahead of other trades and occupations. It is not clear exactly what a lace man was, but it probably involved buying the lacework of the local women, who worked from their homes, and reselling their wares to other dealers or merchants.
