Sprinkle's Opera House
By Loretta Terry
Shakespeare said "All the world is a stage" but in Mason for many years
there was but one stage and that stage was located in the Opera House.
The Opera House is one of Mason's best kept secrets and until recently only
the long time residents knew of its existence.
Located in the 5/3 Bank building, the theater still occupies the 2nd floor
but is now used as a storage room. It was built in 1887 by Samuel Sprinkle
and has not been opened to the public for more than half a century.
The entrance was through double doors located on the right front of the
building leading to a wide staircase opening into the front part of the
hall. The large open room has six large windows and a set of double doors
leading to the outside. Five chandeliers hang from the high ceiling. There
was never permanent seating. The markings for playing basketball are still
on the floor and the flue openings for the heating stoves are still evident.
The stage is at the south end of the building. Its back wall is covered with
names, mainly locals who performed there. It has a hand painted backdrop
which is still hanging, a counterweight system and a fly area that goes up
to the ceiling of the building.
The dressing rooms are located under the stage with small circular stairways
leading to the wing areas. The stage is about 20' deep with an apron about
35' wide. Along the apron is a hewed out trough which was used to set the
lighting for performances. To the right of the stage, on the same level is
a small orchestra "pit" enclosed with a railing fitted with spindles.
Why it was called the Opera House is a mystery to me. As far as I know an
opera was never performed there. But, aah, in its heyday. . .
If only the walls could talk. They could tell of the pomp and ceremony of
the numerous graduations and the delicious banquets served and the rambling
speeches given at the yearly alumni association's meetings. They could
speak of the Ohio State Senatorial Convention which occurred there in 1897
and the furor it caused because of all the people who attended and the lack
of space to house them.
They could tell of the immense crowd who, in 1900, watched what was possibly
the first picture show shown in Mason. They could relate the great pride
the audiences felt when the locals performed in school plays, minstrel shows
and operettas. They could recall the excitement that raced through the
town when the traveling shows and the Bartone medicine shows came to
perform.
They could tell of the audiences who sat at rapt attention at the concerts,
lectures and lyceum courses. They could even tell of the crowd at the
preliminary trial for John McClung when he was accused of violently
murdering his wife and how the old man sat quietly, his head leaned back and
his eyes closed while testimony was given about her screams, his bloody
clothes and the trail of blood throughout the house.
They could describe the dancers, dressed in their best, who waltzed the
night away at the "select balls" and the Farmers Institutes and the
basketball games. . .But the walls can't talk so we can only imagine what it
would have been like to take part in the many activities that were held
there.
In the late 1930's, a school gym and a new town hall were built and uses for
the facility dwindled until it was finally closed. The Opera House was no
more.
Today, the room is silent. The stage is dark. . . They sit, with all their
paraphernalia, as if suspended in time, waiting in anticipation for the
lights to come on, the actors to reappear and the Opera House to regain its
rightful place as the entertainment center of Mason.
