She had complained of weakness and shortness of breath for over a year prior to her death but her doctor merely prescribed vitamins and tonics over the telephone, without examining her in his office. When her leukemia was finally diagnosed (by a different doctor), she had only weeks to live. She decided not to enter the hospital and died quietly at home, in her own bed with her two children at her side.From <i>The Oregonian<i>, Portland, Oregon, 3 July 1992: Thelma I. Pruitt Barnum died of leukemia Monday in her Lake Oswego home at the age of 81. At her request, no funeral will be held. She was born Jan. 27, 1911, in Fraser, Idaho. She was raised and received her early education in Harney County and attended Oregon State College, now OSU. She married Lee J. Barnum in 1936 [sb 1933] and the couple moved to Lake Oswego in 1946. Mrs. Barnum had worked as an elementary school teacher for a number of years. She later was involved in the real estate field from 1956 until her recent retirement. [Not so, she was still working at the time of her death]. Her husband died in 1946 [sb 1948]. Mrs. Barnum is survived by her son Patrick of Washington, D.C.; daughter Betsy Foss of Oregon City; brother Norman Pruitt of Lake Oswego; and five grandchildren. Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances be contributions to th Lake Oswego Adult Community Center.From the Lake Oswego<i> Review<i>, 9 July 1992: Obituaries. Thelma I. She was a primary school teacher for a number of years both before and after her marriage to Lee J. Barnum in 1936 [sb 1933]. The couple moved to Lake Oswego in 1946 and Mr. Barnum passed away that same year [sb 1948]. She was an active member of the real estate profession in Oregon from 1956 until a few months before her death. At her request, no funeral services will be held. Disposition was by cremation. Survivors include her brother, Norman Pruitt of Lake Oswego; her son, Patrick Barnum of Washington, D.C.; her daughter, Betsy Foss of Oregon City; five grandchildren, Joe and Jason Foss of Oregon City, Alan and Michael Barnum of Lake Oswego, and Chandra Barnum of Bozeman, Montana. The family suggests that remembrances be in the form of contributions to the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center.
