    Record Source: at Bishop Auckland Police Court George ETHERINGTON of Pit Hill was charged with assaulting Thomas GOUNDRY by striking him in the pit with a drill - the boy said he struck in self-defence. "Mr. WILKINSON (one of the two magistrates) thought complainant should have laid the affair before the deputy, as it seemed a very frivolous offence. The costs were very heavy, the boy having been brought from near Beamish. The boy was ordered to pay 2s. to the policeman's expenses, and Mr. WILKINSON forgave the lad the rest of the money".
