Record Source: at Durham County Police Court, James DEACON and Thomas GOUNDRY were charged with committing a breach of the peace by fighting at Low Spennymoor - GOUNDRY pleaded guilty, but DEACON denied the offence. Giving evidence, P.C. FRYER, in reply to DEACON said it was not true the other man set on him, and that he was merely defending himself. In fact, DEACON was the worst of the two - GOUNDRY had wanted to go home, but he would not let him. DEACON said that after the lodge meeting GOUNDRY accused him of getting his father's money stopped. He denied this, whereupon GOUNDRY struck him, and he was obliged to defend himself. The defendants were both bound over to keep the peace, and ordered to pay the costs.
