PICKERING, an Off-License Holder at Tudhoe Grange. While he was serving in the shop the boys brought him the bottles and asked for the halfpenny deposit on each. He noticed that the bottles carried the Shildon stamp, and that their cart had just returned from Shildon. He asked the boys where they had got the bottles, and they said they had got them from Low Spennymoor. The Shop-keeper was not satisfied and went into the yard where he found the gate had been opened and 22 bottles were missing. When arrested Joseph GOUNDRY said "We took them out of the yard, and Peter ROCKS opened the gates" - the others made no reply. They all pleaded guilty and were each ordered to receive six strokes with the birch rod.
