[3] Death note, Express and Telegraph (Adelaide, SA : 1867 - 1922), Monday 18 February 1878, page 2Mr. T. Ward, J.P., City Coroner, held an inquest at the Duke of Wellington Inn, Payneham, on Saturday, February 16, into the circumstances attending the death of a man named Thomas Harding, who died on the previous day. Mr. William Wade, sen., was chosen foreman of the Jury. F. W. Baily, surgeon, of Norwood, said he was called to see the deceased on'Friday morning. Found him lying on his back in the garden attached to his house at Marden. Deceased was dead, and had only his shirt on. Attended deceased on a previous occasion when he attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat. Deceased was of very intemperate habits. Had made a post-mortem examination, and found the deceased's brain - unnaturally soft andcongested on one side. The other organs of the body were all more or less diseased by alcohol. The immediate cause of death was plugging of the pulmonary artery by a clot of blood, which had been in process of formation for two or three days prior to death. The deceased and his family lived very immoral lives. Eliza Harding, wife of deceased, said her late husband was a shoemaker by trade, and was 55 years of age. He was a great drunkard, and had had delirium tremens 15 times previous to his death. Deceased attempted to commit suicide in the latter end of last year. On Monday morning he said he had the horrors worse than he had had them before, and could not get up. On Thursday morning deceased asked for brandy and water, which were given to him. On Friday morning he asked for some tea, which was the only drink that he had that day. Subsequently he got up and attempted to go to the back, but fell down just outside the door. A doctor was sent for, who on arrival said that the deceased was dead. Witness and her husband did not live very happily together, owing to his drunken habits. The Jury returned a verdict that the . deceased died from plugging of the pulmonary artery accelerated by intemperance.
