Record Source: an inquest at the "Victoria Inn", Byers Green heard that a dispute took place about the possession of the coppers that were "hoyed" during the game and one of the other players "put the deceased down for the purpose of obtaining the coins deceased was holding in each of his clenched hands". The next day GOUNDRY and another youth went to a gala and were in a "shuggy-boat" which was competing with another boat to see which could go highest. A doctor told the inquest that the "immediate cause of death was inflammation of the membranes of the spinal cord. It would take a lot of violence to give concussion of the spine" but he could not say if the violence at the pitch and toss had been sufficient to cause it. He said "deceased must have strained himself severely in the swing, because he complained much of the shoulder joints. A draught whilst sweating might cause an affection of the spine. He had no opinion whether the injuries were due most to the fall or to the swing - the jury returned a verdict accordingly, adding that how the injuries were caused there was no evidence".
