Record Source: at Gateshead Police Court, William GOUNDRY (21), of Half Moon Lane, Low Spennymoor, with a 19-year old man, both from Spennymoor and employed by the same firm, was accused of careless driving, driving motor-lorries at a speed exceeding 30 m.p.h., and failing to keep a record of their hours of work. Police evidence, which the youths disputed, was that their speed on the Great North Road at Gateshead reached 50 miles an hour, and that they continually passed and repassed. They said that when they went to court they did not know what the charges were. The presiding magistrate said "If you don't look after yourselves when on the road you will be stopped from driving altogether. That is the type of lads you are. You don't look when you are on the roads and you don't even look at the very summonses you get. Just put your brains to steep and wake up". He said the Magistrates regarded the careless driving accusation as a serious one and ordered the youths to be fined £1 each and their licences to be suspended for a month and endorsed. They were fined 10s. each for the log book offence, and £1 each for speeding.
