Record Source: a printed form to record the death of an Indian Immigrant records that Kuppu GOUNDRY, Colonial No. 80905, a 33 year-old male, died at the Addington Hospital, Natal, South Africa. His occupation was N?G.R., his residence was Durban. The Cause of Death and Remarks lists Fracture of Skull, Injuries w---, Tetanus, Result of an accident. A note appears to read "Ex SS Pongola 33 28?.9.1900". There are other indecipherable notes on the form, as well as "(Magl. enquiry held)". The form was stamped as having been received at the Protector of Indian Immigrants Office on 29 April 1910.
Kuppu appears to have been one of approximately 152,184 Indians who arrived from India on 384 voyages under a scheme of indenture between 1860 and 1911. He arrived from Madras on the ss "Pongola" (her 33rd such trip) on 21 Sep 1900.
The arrival of the first Indians in Natal in 1860 marked the beginnings of an organised scheme whereby they went to seek gainful employment in a fledgling sugar industry. While many worked on the sugar fields, others worked on the wattle and tea plantations and in the coal-mines. Some came as domestic servants as Dhobis, waiters and house-servants and were able to command a respectable salary of 20 shillings per month.
