With an extensive background in academia, Purvis has served as an art tutor at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands, and is currently an esteemed associate professor at Boston University College of Fine Arts, where he has been the department chairman since September 1982. Purvis has also held significant leadership roles as the Director Ad Interim for the School of Visual Arts at the Boston University College of Communication and the University of South Carolina.
