Bartlett Laffey (1841 – March 22, 1901) was an Irish-born United States Navy sailor and Medal of Honor recipient. Hailing from County Galway, Ireland, he enlisted in the United States Navy from Massachusetts in 1862 and served on the stern wheel gunboat USS Marmora. Laffey's courageous actions during a Confederate attack on Union positions at Yazoo City, Mississippi, on March 5, 1864, led to his Medal of Honor recognition. Despite facing enemy rifle fire that damaged the gun carriage and rammer, he valiantly manned his gun, significantly contributing to repelling the fierce Confederate assault. Laffey passed away in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on March 22, 1901. His bravery and dedication were honored through the naming of two United States Navy ships after him. The USS Laffey (DD-459), a Benson class destroyer, was christened in 1941, while the USS Laffey (DD-724), an Allen M.
