Gaither's political allegiance as a Whig and a supporter of Henry Clay further shaped his career, leading to his appointment as superintendent of the mint at Charlotte in 1841 by President John Tyler. During the American Civil War, Gaither staunchly defended the Southern cause and represented the state in the First Confederate Congress and the Second Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1865.
