Dr. Edward Price noted that the most common surnames among the families were Gibson, Nichols, and Perkins. Research revealed that the group's ancestors were documented as free people of color in census records. Paternal line descendants of Bryson Gibson and Valentine Collins, who took part in the Melungeon DNA Project, belong to Haplogroup E-M2. The group was categorized as free Black and Mulatto in Kentucky before the American Civil War. Researcher Paul Heinegg (1997) has traced the majority of the Free Negro population's ancestry to African Americans who were free in Virginia before the American Revolution. He found that many of these free African Americans were the mixed-race children of early unions between white women, whether indentured servants or free, and African men, whether indentured servants, free, or enslaved. This occurred before the racial caste had solidified, and in small farms, white and black workers lived near each other and associated. According to the law at the time, children inherited the social status of their mothers, following the principle of partus sequitur ventrem, which was adopted in the 17th-century Virginia colony. As a result, since the mothers were white and free, their children were born free.
