The genus Claudea was named in honor of Claude Lamouroux, father of Jean Vincent Félix Lamouroux, by the latter in 1813. There are currently 4 species of Claudea, with Claudea multifida being collected from the northern Indian Ocean and reported in various locations in Asia. Claudea batanensis has been found in Southeast Asia, particularly in the South China Sea and Taiwan. The algae's morphology includes net-like fronds and discoid to conical pseudoparenchymatous holdfasts. It has dioecious gametophytes and its cultivation has not been recorded.
