Coree First Name Meaning

Coree is a gender-neutral name of Irish origin, meaning "Hollow." The name is associated with the Coree Native American tribe, a small group that inhabited the coastal region of southeastern North Carolina. The tribe's population dwindled to as few as 125 members by 1701, likely due to diseases and conflict. During the early 18th century, the Coree allied with the Iroquoian Tuscarora against English settlers and participated in the Tuscarora War, albeit unsuccessfully. Surviving Coree members merged with the nearby Algonquian-speaking Machapunga tribe and settled in present-day Hyde County. The Coree language was not mutually intelligible with major language stocks in the region, and there is speculation about their relation to the Iroquoian-speaking Cherokee. Ultimately, the Coree merged with the Tuscarora tribe. This unique name has a rich history and an intriguing connection to Native American culture.
