Demas First Name Meaning

Demas is a male name of Greek origin, meaning "Popular." It is derived from the Greek name Δημᾶς (Dēmas), likely a short form of Demetrios. In the New Testament of the Bible, Demas is mentioned as a "fellow worker" of the Apostle Paul in Philemon and Colossians. However, in Second Timothy, it is stated that Demas deserted Paul due to his love for the world, leading to comparisons of him being 'Paul's Judas.' The name Demas has also been referenced in literature, such as in John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" and Lora Johnson's novel "The Demas Revelation." In a different context, St. John in "Jane Eyre" refers to the vice of Demas. This name carries historical and literary significance, reflecting the complex nature of human choices and motivations.
