Dita Hopkins Kinney (September 13, 1855 – April 16, 1921) was a pioneering figure in the nursing profession, renowned as the first superintendent of the United States Army Nurse Corps from 1901 to 1909. Born in New York City and raised in California, she received her nursing training at Massachusetts General Hospital after becoming a young widow. Kinney's career spanned various locations including Massachusetts, Minnesota, and California before she joined the army as a nurse in 1898. Her exemplary service led to her appointment as the superintendent of the United States Army Nursing Corps, where she conducted lecture and inspection tours of army hospitals in the United States and abroad. Despite resigning from the superintendency in 1909 due to health reasons, she continued to contribute to the profession by teaching American Red Cross nurses during World War I.
