Despite others' prior attempts at inventing a sewing machine, Howe's refinements led to his 1846 patent for a lockstitch design, incorporating features still found in modern machines. After legal battles to defend his patent, Howe received royalties, which he used to support the Union Army during the Civil War. Elias Peter Hoayek, also spelled Hoyek, Hwayek, Huayek, Juayek, Hawayek, or Elias Boutros Hoayek, was the 72nd Maronite Catholic Patriarch of Antioch from 1898 until his passing in 1931. Born in Helta, Batroun, North Lebanon, on December 4, 1843, he received his education at the Seminary College of St. John Maroun and the Jesuit seminary of Ghazir. Hoayek was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1870 and later elected as Patriarch in 1899.During his patriarchate, he oversaw significant developments, including the construction of a new patriarchal residence, founding of the Congregation of the Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family, and establishment of Maronite ecclesiastical structures in Egypt, Cyprus, the United States, and Argentina.
