Pratt's life took a drastic turn when he was wrongfully convicted for a murder he did not commit and spent 27 years in prison, including eight years in solitary confinement. However, in 1997, his conviction was vacated due to the prosecution's withholding of crucial evidence that could have proven his innocence. Following his release, Pratt dedicated himself to human rights activism until his passing in 2011. Notably, he was also the godfather of the late rapper Tupac Shakur.
