Haile Selassie Gugsa CBE (1907–1985) was an Ethiopian army commander and a member of the Imperial family from Tigray. He is known for his controversial decision to side with Italy instead of the Ethiopian Empire during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, ultimately becoming a fascist collaborator. Gugsa was appointed as the Shum of eastern Tigray Province and married Leult Zenebework Haile Selassie, Emperor Haile Selassie's second daughter. However, their marriage was short-lived, and tensions arose between Gugsa and Emperor Haile Selassie. During the Italo-Ethiopian War, Gugsa betrayed Ethiopia, submitting to Italian rule and participating in war councils with the Italian commander. His loyalty to the Italians earned him the title of Ras and recognition as the senior Tigrean prince over his rival. Gugsa's collaboration with the Italians continued during the occupation of Ethiopia, and he even welcomed Adolf Hitler in Italy. However, towards the end of the liberation of Italian East Africa, he was temporarily placed in power in Tigray by the British. Hailemelekot Sahle Selassie (1824 – 9 November 1855) was Negus of Shewa, a historical region of Ethiopia, from 12 October 1847 until his death. He was the oldest son of Negus Sahle Selassie, an important Amhara nobleman, and his wife Woizero Bezabish Wolde. Hailemelekot, of Amhara royal descent, was raised with a rigorous education, including academic studies, horsemanship, and the arts of war. His rise to power was marked by conflicts and challenges, including a revolt by the Abichu Oromo, which he managed to pacify. During his reign, little is known except for a letter he wrote to the "Queen of the Ferangi" (Europeans), expressing a desire for friendship and skilled workmen. The letter was misunderstood by the British, leading to a strained interaction.
