Hickson Compact Group

Paul Hickson, a renowned astronomer, identified and published a list of Hickson Compact Groups (HCG) in 1982, with HCG 92, also known as Stephan's Quintet, gaining particular fame. According to Hickson, these compact groups are characterized by a high proportion of galaxies displaying peculiarities in their morphology or kinematics, as well as nuclear radio and infrared emissions. The presence of starburst or active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, along with large quantities of diffuse gas, suggests that these groups are dynamically dominated by dark matter and likely evolve through gravitational processes within looser associations. The interactions and mergers of galaxies within these compact groups are expected to ultimately lead to their demise. Hickson's work has shed light on the significant role that compact groups may play in the evolution of galaxies. For further insights into his research, Hickson's articles in the Astrophysical Journal and the Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics are recommended.

Hickson & Welch

Hickson & Welch was a prominent British chemicals company established in Castleford, known for its production of DDT and other chemical products. Ernest Hickson founded the company in 1893 to introduce sulphur black to the British cotton industry, and later, Hickson & Welch Ltd was established in 1931. The company quickly became the largest producer of DDT in the UK and expanded its operations to include the manufacturing of dyestuffs and timber preservatives. In 1951, it became a public company and underwent several changes in ownership and rebranding over the years. Unfortunately, the company was plagued by three separate explosions in 1926, 1930, and 1992, with the latter being the most devastating, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries. In 2000, Hickson International was acquired by Arch Chemicals and eventually closed in 2005. The site's gas-fired power station was demolished in 2021. Despite its tumultuous history, Hickson & Welch left a significant mark on the chemical industry in the UK.
