John Ratcliffe, also known as John Sicklemore, was an early Jamestown colonist, governor, and sea captain. Ratcliffe was born in Lancashire and changed his name to Ratcliffe as an alias. He served as a seaman before going to Virginia and became the second president of the colony of Jamestown. However, he fell out of favor with many colonists due to his handling of trade with the natives and his performance during food shortages. Ratcliffe was eventually removed from office and succeeded by Matthew Scrivener. He later commanded the ship Diamond in the Third Supply fleet of Sir Thomas Gates. Unfortunately, Ratcliffe met a tragic end during the Starving Time in December 1609 when he and 25 fellow colonists were ambushed and killed by Powhatan Indians.
