Kazuko Takatsukasa, formerly known as Kazuko, Princess Taka, was born on September 30, 1929, as the third daughter of Emperor Shōwa and Empress Kōjun. She married Toshimichi Takatsukasa in 1950, relinquishing her imperial title and leaving the Japanese Imperial Family as required by law. Notably, their marriage was the first between a member of the imperial family and a commoner. Tragically, her husband's untimely death in 1966 was followed by a violent home invasion, leading her to relocate to the Akasaka Estate in Tokyo. Despite these hardships, she served as the chief priestess of Ise Grand Shrine from 1974 to 1988. The Takatsukasas, who had no biological children, adopted a son, Naotake, who later became the head priest of the Ise Jingu Shrine. Kazuko Takatsukasa passed away on May 26, 1989, at the age of 59, just four months after her father's death. Her legacy lives on through her family and her dedicated service to the Ise Grand Shrine.
