Grant to several significant positions, including consul-general of the United States at Calcutta, India, and Governor of New Mexico Territory. During his tenure as governor, Giddings faced challenges related to violence and lawlessness in the territory. Despite his efforts to address these issues, he passed away in office. Giddings' legacy as a politician and his contributions to Michigan and New Mexico are remembered to this day. He was laid to rest at the Mountain Home Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
