Marwan Hadid (1934–1976) was a prominent figure in the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Syria. Known for his influential leadership and fervent preaching, Hadid spearheaded a hardline insurgent faction within the Muslim Brotherhood. His efforts in the late 1960s and early 1970s contributed to the expansion of an Islamist militant network, seeking a direct confrontation with the Ba'ath regime in Syria. Notably, Hadid founded the Fighting Vanguard, serving as the military arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. He played a pivotal role in leading the Islamist uprising in Syria, personally commanding the armed uprising in Hama in 1964 against the Baathist regime. However, his activism led to his capture by the forces of Hafez al-Assad, and he ultimately passed away in Mezzeh prison in 1976. Regarded as one of the most charismatic imams in Hama during the 1960s, Hadid was successful in recruiting students to the underground Islamist movement in Syria, serving as an inspiration and role model for radical Sunni Islamist activism.
