Mate Parlov (16 November 1948 – 29 July 2008) was a renowned Croatian-Yugoslavian boxer and Olympic gold medalist, known for his remarkable career as both an amateur and professional boxer. Born in Split and raised in Pula, Parlov achieved numerous accolades throughout his career, including being voted the Best Balkan Athlete of the Year in 1974.As an amateur, Parlov participated in an impressive 310 matches, winning the Golden Glove award twice and securing multiple championship titles, including eight-time champion of Yugoslavia, five-time champion of the Balkans, and two-time champion of Europe. His crowning achievement came at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, where he clinched the gold medal in the light heavyweight division.Transitioning to professional boxing, Parlov continued his success by winning twelve of his first thirteen fights and later becoming the WBC world light-heavyweight champion, marking a historic moment as the first professional world champion from a communist country.Following his retirement from boxing, Parlov ventured into coaching and later ran a coffee bar in Pula. Mate Drinković (1868-1931) was a Croatian physician, politician, and advocate for the unification of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia and Dalmatia. Graduating from the University of Graz with a degree in medicine, he practiced in several Croatian cities before becoming a member of the leadership of the Party of Rights. Known for his support of the Rijeka Resolution and the creation of a common South-Slavic state, Drinković was arrested and convicted of treason in 1914, leading to imprisonment until 1917. He played a significant role in the establishment of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs after World War I and held ministerial positions in various governments during the 1920s. His political views evolved towards advocating for integral Yugoslavism as he became a member of the Croatian Bloc coalition. Drinković passed away in Vienna from pneumonia and was laid to rest at the Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb.
