Hartley's entry into The Cure came about when the band sought a new bassist and Gallup recommended him as the first full-time keyboardist, expanding their musical horizon. His tenure with The Cure saw his involvement in the creation of the 1980 album Seventeen Seconds and the subsequent tour. Despite his departure from the band due to creative disparities with Robert Smith, he maintained his connection with Gallup and ventured into other musical projects, such as being an early member of Fools Dance and releasing a solo album under the name Matthieu in 1987.
