Mattox Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, flows through the Washington District of Westmoreland County, Virginia, near the colonial stagecoach stop of Oak Grove. Stretching 13.9 miles, the lower 3 miles of the creek is navigable and lies close to the birthplaces of George Washington and James Monroe. The area holds historical significance, as it was where Lawrence Washington, grandfather of George Washington, was born in 1659. Mattox Creek was a bustling port for trade during its prime, dealing in commodities such as tobacco, fruits, and vegetables due to its fertile fields. The creek was also a site of significant events during the Civil War, with Confederate troops operating a supply base and a notable battle occurring in March 1865. Today, Mattox Creek is a picturesque wildlife and recreation area, offering activities such as boating, skiing, fishing, and swimming.
