Meira Paibi, also known as the Women torch bearers, is a significant Meitei women's social movement in the Indian state of Manipur. Established in 1977 in Kakching district, the movement derived its name from the flaming torches carried by the women as they march through city streets, both as a patrol and in protest against human rights violations. Meira Paibi has been recognized as the "largest grassroots, civilian movement fighting state atrocities and human rights violations in Manipur" by The Times of India. The movement's leaders, such as A. K. Janaki Leima, have been vocal about their fight against drug abuse, crimes against women, and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). The movement's activities have expanded to include public meetings, demonstrations, road closures, hunger strikes, and mass rallies. Meira Paibi's role in various events, including the 2023 Manipur violence, has been a subject of controversy. The movement has attracted attention for its involvement in instigating violence and its alleged role in certain incidents. Despite this, the Meira Paibi movement continues to be a prominent force in advocating for human rights and addressing social issues in Manipur.
