Merrick Brian Garland is an American lawyer and jurist who served as the 86th United States attorney general from 2021 to 2025. Garland attended Harvard University and Harvard Law School, where he excelled academically and was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. His legal career includes roles as a law clerk, corporate litigator, federal prosecutor, and circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Merrick Elderton

Merrick Beaufoy Elderton MBE was an English cricketer and educator born on 21 February 1884 in Brentford, Middlesex. He was a right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper, educated at Merchant Taylors' School and Clare College, Cambridge. Elderton made his first-class cricket debut for Cambridge University in 1907 and also played for the Gentlemen of England. After graduating, he took a teaching position at Sherborne School, where he taught Alan Turing. During World War I, Elderton served with the Royal Garrison Artillery and was promoted to Acting Captain. Following the war, he continued playing cricket for Dorset and made a first-class appearance for the West against the touring New Zealanders in 1927. He played Minor Counties cricket for Dorset until 1938 and continued teaching at Sherborne School until his tragic death on 11 December 1939. He died after a collision with a cyclist near his home in Sherborne. Elderton's legacy lives on through his contributions to cricket and education.
