Mervin Ray Hughes, also known as The Serial Shooter, is an American serial killer who gained notoriety for a series of drive-by shootings in Oakland, California, in January 1999. Born on January 27, 1969, Hughes had a history of violence, having been convicted of manslaughter in a 1986 shooting and suspected of another murder in 1992. During his January 1999 shooting spree, Hughes targeted multiple neighborhoods in East Oakland, killing two people and injuring several others. His arrest came after one of the cars he used in the shootings was traced back to him. Hughes was found guilty of his crimes and sentenced to death in 2005, with an additional 300-year sentence in case his death sentence is dismissed. He is currently incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, awaiting execution. The case was highly publicized and drew attention to the issue of serial killers in the United States.

Mervin Clark Stanley (May 6, 1857 – February 1, 1907) was an American businessman and politician from New York. He was born in New Britain, Connecticut, to Oliver Cromwell Stanley and Charlotte Hine Stanley. Stanley ventured into the lumber, coal, and builders' supplies business in New Britain before moving to New York City in 1899, where he became a partner in a firm of commission merchants and exporters. A staunch Republican, he developed a close relationship with Governor Charles Evans Hughes. Stanley served as a member of the New York State Assembly from 1905 until his untimely death in 1907. He passed away at his Manhattan residence after undergoing two operations for appendicitis and was laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in New Britain. Their findings, documented in the "Sketches in North America and the Oregon Territory" (1849), provided valuable insights into the region's strategic value and influenced the reconstruction of Fort Edmonton as Fort Edmonton Park in the 1960s.
