Muhsin Hendricks (June 1967 – 15 February 2025) was a prominent South African imam, Islamic scholar, and LGBTQ activist. Born and raised in Cape Town, he became the world's first openly gay imam after coming out in 1996. Throughout his life, Hendricks was deeply committed to advocating for greater acceptance of LGBTQ individuals within Islam. He founded the Inner Circle, later known as the Al-Fitrah Foundation, to support gay Muslims in reconciling their sexual orientation with their religious faith. In opposition to mainstream Islamic views, Hendricks interpreted the Quran as not condemning homosexuality and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah as condemning rape, not homosexuality. He faced condemnation and a fatwa from the Muslim Judicial Council for his views.Hendricks' advocacy extended beyond South Africa, including establishing Masjidul Ghurbaah and Masjid Ul-Umam, and advocating for LGBTQ rights in Kenya. He also developed multifaith training courses and raised concerns about the potential harm caused by the Muslim Judicial Council's decisions. Additionally, he used online platforms to spread positive messages about love and created videos about LGBTQ Muslims in Hindi and Urdu.Tragically, Hendricks was fatally shot in an attack in Bethelsdorp, South Africa, in February 2025.
