After the 1917 Revolution, he became a local revolutionary leader, advocating for the expropriation and redistribution of large estates to the peasantry. Makhno's influence expanded as he led the Makhnovshchina, a mass movement by the Ukrainian peasantry to establish anarchist communism in Ukraine between 1918 and 1921.Throughout the Ukrainian Civil War, Makhno allied with the Soviet Russian Bolsheviks, but their relationship was short-lived due to differences on the movement's autonomy.
