In 1918, she self-published "The Fairyland Around Us," combining scientific facts with mystical nature observations. Her encounter with Atlantic Monthly publisher Ellery Sedgwick in 1919 led to the publication of her childhood diary, "The Story of Opal: The Journal of an Understanding Heart," which garnered international acclaim. Despite the success, her claims of being the daughter of French naturalist Henri, Prince of Orléans, and her subsequent relocation to England fueled widespread speculation and controversy. Whiteley's life story has been the subject of numerous adaptations, including a biography by Benjamin Hoff and film and theater productions. She spent her later years in psychiatric care in England and passed away in 1992.
