Orpah First Name Meaning

Orpah is a female name of Hebrew origin that means "Back Of The Neck." This name is derived from the Hebrew word "ʿOrpā," which translates to "neck" or "fawn." In the Book of Ruth in the Hebrew Bible, Orpah is portrayed as a woman from Moab who was the daughter-in-law of Naomi and wife of Chilion. After her husband's passing, Orpah, along with her sister-in-law Ruth, expressed a desire to go to Judea with Naomi. However, Orpah ultimately chose to return to her people and her gods, as opposed to staying with Naomi like Ruth did. In rabbinic literature, Orpah is depicted in a negative light, with associations to the mother of the four Philistine giants, including Goliath. Notably, Orpah was the original name given to media mogul Oprah Winfrey by her mother.
