He was known for his staunch opposition to slavery and played a pivotal role in founding the political, abolitionist newspaper Free Soil Banner in 1849.Butler's legacy is primarily associated with the founding of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he was instrumental in the establishment of the university, which opened its doors in 1855 as the North Western Christian University. He served as the head of the Board of Directors and later became Chancellor, ultimately leading to the university being renamed Butler University in 1877 in his honor.In his personal life, Butler married twice and had a total of ten children.
