The term's origin is uncertain, possibly from Latin "pagius" (servant) or Greek "pais" (child). They received education in horse-riding, hunting, and courtly manners, while accompanying their lords to war. At age fourteen, they could become squires, and by 21, knights. Pages were also present in great houses as apprentice footmen, and later, as decorative figures in fancy costumes attending fashionable ladies and lords. In modern times, traditional pages are rare, but the US television network NBC's page program is a notable contemporary example.
