Philemon Holland (1552 – 9 February 1637) was an English schoolmaster, physician, and translator, best known for his first English translations of significant works by Livy, Pliny the Elder, Plutarch, and William Camden's Britannia. Born in Chelmsford, Essex, to John Holland, a member of the Norfolk family, Philemon received his education at King Edward VI Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge, before embarking on a successful career. He began his professional journey as a teacher at King Henry VIII School and later became a tutor to George Berkeley, the 8th Baron Berkeley. Holland's notable works include the translation of Livy's "Ab Urbe Condita," which was presented in a grand folio volume and dedicated to the Queen, and the translation of Pliny the Elder's "The Historie of the World," dedicated to Sir Robert Cecil. His dedication to translating classical and contemporary works, along with his teaching and medical practice, showcases his multifaceted talents. Philemon Thomas Herbert (November 1, 1825 – July 23, 1864) was an American politician who gained notoriety for a violent altercation with a waiter. Born in Pine Apple, Alabama, Herbert became a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and served two terms in the California State Assembly before representing California's Second District in the 34th Congress from 1855 to 1857. His infamous encounter at Willard's Hotel in Washington, where he fatally shot a waiter who refused to serve him breakfast, marked a turning point in his career. Despite being acquitted of manslaughter, he abandoned his congressional role and later relocated to El Paso, Texas, where he practiced law. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Herbert joined the Confederate Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel, commanding the Arizona and 7th Texas Cavalry Regiments. Tragically, he succumbed to his battle wounds on July 23, 1864, and was laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Kingston, Louisiana. Herbert's controversial legacy continues to attract attention and has been the subject of various historical accounts and news features.
