Platon, also known as Paul Kulbusch, was an Estonian bishop and the first Orthodox saint of Estonian ethnicity. Born on 25 July 1869 in Pootsi, Estonia, he graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and became a priest at the Estonian Orthodox Church of Saint Isidore in St. Petersburg. Platon was elected as the bishop of Reval (modern Tallinn) during a tumultuous period marked by World War I and Estonia's struggle for independence. Despite the challenging times, he traveled extensively through Estonia, supporting the country's independence and visiting parishes on horseback. Tragically, Platon was arrested and executed by the Bolsheviks on 14 January 1919 during the Tartu Credit Center Massacre. In 1982, he was canonized as a martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, and later by the Russian Orthodox Church and the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Platon's legacy lives on as a symbol of faith and resilience in the face of adversity.
