Rahma Haruna, born in Nigeria in 1996 or 1997, gained international attention at the age of 19 when a photo of her, taken by photographer Sani Maikatanga, went viral. Haruna faced a challenging life as her legs and arms stopped growing, leaving her disabled and unable to perform basic tasks. She had to spend most of her time inside a plastic bucket due to the pain in her extremities. Following the viral photo, an anonymous donor provided her with a wheelchair to aid her mobility. Despite her parents' investment of approximately 1 million naira (US$2,737.89) in treatment, Haruna did not recover. Tragically, she passed away on December 25, 2016, at the age of 19 in Kano, Nigeria, due to unknown causes. Her story has touched the hearts of many and serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength shown by individuals facing extraordinary challenges.

Rahma El Siddig Mustafa, also known as Rahma Mustafa, is a prominent Sudanese disability rights activist widely recognized for her advocacy work. She gained international attention in 2015 when she was charged an additional fee by Cambodian airline Bassaka Air due to her wheelchair use, sparking a public outcry and an investigation by the Cambodian Disability Action Council to assess potential breaches of legislation. Over the years, Mustafa has held key positions, including serving as a program manager for ADD International and being awarded a fellowship from the International Disability Alliance Switzerland to study disability rights at the Centre for Disability Law and Policy. She has also represented the Sudan National Union of Persons with Physical Disability at various conferences, including a significant role at the United Nations Economic and Social Council event on Inclusive Humanitarian Action = Effective Humanitarian Action in 2020. Moreover, Mustafa has contributed to publications, such as the insightful work "Tigray Refugees with Disabilities in Eastern Sudan Camps," co-authored with I. Ouertani and published by Islamic Relief in October 2021. Her dedication to promoting disability rights and inclusive humanitarian action continues to inspire and drive positive change on a global scale.
