Born in Lisbon, Louisiana, Oakes rose to prominence after attending Louisiana Tech University, formerly known as Louisiana Industrial Institute. His professional baseball journey began when he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 1909, followed by a move to the St. Louis Cardinals the next year. Oakes spent four seasons as a starting center fielder for the Cardinals before transitioning to the Federal League in 1914, where he also took on the role of player-manager for the Pittsburgh Rebels. Throughout his career, Oakes showcased impressive stats, including a .279 batting average, 428 runs, 112 doubles, 42 triples, 15 home runs, 397 RBIs, 163 stolen bases, and 265 bases on balls in 986 games across seven major league seasons.
