Reuben Samuel (January 12, 1828 – March 1, 1908) was the stepfather of the American outlaws Frank and Jesse James. He married their mother, Zerelda James, in 1855 and raised a total of seven children, including Frank and Jesse, as well as acquiring seven slaves by 1860. During the American Civil War, Samuel's farm was raided by militiamen searching for Frank James, and he was tortured to reveal the guerrillas' location. In 1875, Allan Pinkerton attempted to capture the James brothers, resulting in an explosion that killed Samuel's young son and injured Zerelda. Samuel suffered brain damage from the incident. He died in 1908 at the age of 80 after spending seven years at the St. Joseph State Hospital for the Insane in Missouri. Some of his family still reside in the Kansas City, Missouri area.
