Throughout most of his life, he entertained audiences with his piano skills at rent parties in the city, while also spending some time in East St. Louis in the early 1920s. In 1929, he made his only series of recordings for Vocalion Records, including the famous "Gettin' Dirty Just Shakin' That Thing" and "Head Rag Hop", which featured talking by Tampa Red and Frankie Jaxon. Nelson's record "Head Rag Hop" was part of the Brunswick Collector Series label, alongside "Wilkins Street Stomp" by Speckled Red. He passed away in May 1974 due to renal failure.
