Richard Romney Sedgwick (29 May 1894 – 20 January 1972) was a renowned British historian, civil servant, and diplomat. He was born to Professor Adam Sedgwick and Laura Helen Elizabeth Robinson. Sedgwick married Mana St David Hodson in 1936, with whom he had a son, Adam, and a daughter, Sophie. After completing his education at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, he became a Fellow of the college in 1919. Sedgwick is best known for his editorial work on The History of Parliament, particularly the volumes covering the House of Commons from 1715 to 1754. His contributions shed light on the survival of the Whig and Tory parties during the reigns of George I and George II. Notably, his scholarly expertise and insights were acknowledged by Eveline Cruickshanks in her work on the Tories and the Jacobite rising of 1745. Sedgwick's significant publications include articles and books, such as "John, Lord Hervey, Some Materials towards Memoirs of the Reign of King George II" and "The History of Parliament: The House of Commons 1715–1754." His scholarly work continues to be valued in the field of British history.
