Silvino Francisco

Silvino Francisco (3 May 1946 – 14 December 2024) was a highly talented South African professional snooker player, best known for winning the 1985 British Open. Hailing from a family deeply entrenched in snooker, with both his brother Manuel and nephew Peter excelling in the sport, Francisco's success was not surprising. However, his career was not without controversy, as he was involved in several scandals, including accusing his opponent Kirk Stevens of playing under the influence of drugs during the 1985 British Open final, for which he was fined. He was also embroiled in a betting scandal after the 1989 Masters, resulting in his arrest, although he was later released without charge. Francisco faced personal struggles as well, battling gambling problems and declaring bankruptcy in 1996, followed by a three-year prison sentence for cannabis smuggling in 1997. Despite these challenges, in his later years, he found solace in family, charity work, and mentoring young snooker enthusiasts. He passed away on 14 December 2024 at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy as the only African snooker player to have clinched a professional snooker ranking event.
