SIGN UPSonora is a female name of Spanish origin, meaning "Pleasant Sounding". It is derived from the Spanish word "sonoro", which translates to "sonorous" or "loud". The name has a pleasant and melodious connotation, reflecting the beauty of its Spanish roots. Sonora is also the name of a state in Mexico, known for its diverse geography, including deserts, grasslands, and coastlines along the Gulf of California. The state has a rich history dating back to the pre-Hispanic period, with evidence of human existence dating back over 10,000 years. Sonora has been economically important for its agriculture, livestock, mining, and as a border state since the Mexican–American War. In the modern era, industry, tourism, and agribusiness dominate the state's economy, attracting migration from other parts of Mexico.
Sonora Louise Smart Dodd (February 18, 1882 – March 22, 1978) was the daughter of American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart and the driving force behind the establishment of Father's Day. Born in Arkansas, Sonora moved to Washington with her family at a young age. After her mother's passing, she played a significant role in raising her siblings alongside her father. Sonora married John Bruce Dodd and had a son, John Bruce "Jack" Dodd. The concept of Father's Day was inspired by a church sermon on Mother's Day, leading Sonora to advocate for a day to honor fathers. Her efforts resulted in the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Despite a brief decline in its observance, Father's Day gained popularity and was eventually recognized nationally. In addition to her work on Father's Day, Sonora was involved in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and pursued interests in art and fashion design. Her legacy lives on as Father's Day continues to be celebrated annually.
